Summer Menu Launch at Fumo, Birmingham

 Oh Fumo, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

When Venetian tapas restaurant and cocktail bar San Carlo Fumo opened in 2012, it gave Birmingham the injection of glamour, it so desperately needed.

By now, everyone should know the Fumo drill – fabulous food, cocktails and fun.  And Fumo is always double the fun when San Carlo Group Chef Consultant Aldo Zilli is around. 

I was recently invited to the afternoon summer menu launch hosted by Aldo to sample selected new seasonal cicchetti dishes venue by the group’s executive chef Filippo Pagani. 

Having previously worked with Aldo,  I know how passionately he feels about good food and service – so his partnership with The San Carlo Group, is most definitely a marriage made in heaven.   I also know that Aldo is very, very passionate about vegetables.   The 59-year-old chef grew up on a farm in the central Italian region of Abruzzo and this influence is obvious in Fumo’s new summer dishes.

I loved Farinata - a chickpea tartlet (which originates from the Liguria region in Italy) served with garlic, cherry tomato and pesto dressing and Summer Bruschetta,  with broad beans,  mint and parmesan ricotta. 

The award for star dish goes to the stunning looking Carpaccio of beetroot.   The sweet flavour of the wafer-thin rounds of raw beetroot, was beautifully balanced by wild garlic, parmesan cheese and roasted pumpkin seeds.


There was seafood and meat on the menu too.   I loved the Scallop and Pea Risotto as well as the  Slow­cooked Pork Belly with fava beans and pea shoots.    But my fellow diners and I were in agreement -  the vegetarian dishes took centre stage – alongside Aldo of course. 


Showcasing off impressive social media skills, our flamboyant host  'periscoped' through lunch a  very special caviar martini cocktail making demonstration.  When the resulting cocktail was presented to me,  I couldn’t help letting out a squeal of delight. It tasted, as you would imagine - very rich and decadent – well suited to my personal tastes.

 Fumo’s cocktails are legendary and they include the infamous El Fuego cocktail – a chilli vodka creation,  garnished with a big fat red chilli and the Midori Sour - the perfect summer afternoon cocktail.

Between periscoping, Aldo flittered around our table like a foodie fairy godfather, sprinkling feel good stardust and making sure everyone was having a fabulous time.  But then sadly the clock struck five, lunch was over and it was time to go home.


Fumo Birmingham was ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in the 2015 UK and Ireland Les Routiers Awards.
